How ChatGPT and Google AI decide which asbestos companies to recommend.

Ask an AI assistant for a licensed asbestos contractor in your town and it will name two or three. It did not choose the best ones. It chose the ones it could verify. This article explains the mechanism, shows what Google's own data says about where the searches have gone, and gives you a two-minute test you can run on your own business today.

Key takeaways
  • AI assistants build shortlists by retrieving web pages and keeping the facts they can confirm. Reputation that is not written down does not exist to them.
  • UK asbestos searches fell sharply year on year to August 2026: asbestos survey down 56%, asbestos testing near me down 62%, asbestos removal down 18%. That demand did not vanish; much of it moved into assistants.
  • Six signals decide whether you are named: a licence it can confirm, consistent business details, reviews that mention the service, pages that answer the exact question, named expertise and structured data.
  • Verification fixes typically show in AI answers within four to eight weeks. Content fixes compound over months.
  • You can test your own visibility with three prompts before you spend a penny.

Where the searches went

For twenty years the question was "who ranks on page one". Now a growing share of research happens inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, which do not return ten links. They write an answer and name a few businesses in it. Google's own Keyword Planner shows the effect in this sector:

UK searchMonthly searchesChange year on year
asbestos survey5,400-56%
asbestos testing near me1,300-62%
asbestos removal near me1,900-33%
asbestos survey cost1,300-32%
asbestos removal8,100-18%

Buildings did not stop containing asbestos. People stopped typing some of these searches into Google and started asking an assistant instead, and the assistant handed them a shortlist. Where a buyer used to compare ten contractors, they now compare the three that were named.

What the assistant is actually doing

When someone asks "who are the best licensed asbestos removal companies in Leeds?", the assistant is not consulting a league table or a directory. It retrieves pages from the web that look relevant, reads them and assembles an answer from the ones it judges reliable. Google describes how its AI features draw on the same signals as search; the other assistants work on similar lines. Reliable, for a machine, means verifiable: facts it can confirm against another source.

That reduces to six signals.

1. A licence it can confirm

The HSE publishes its list of licence holders weekly. If your site states your licence number in text, the assistant can match it. If it finds a logo, it finds nothing. This single signal does more than any other to move a contractor from unverifiable to recommended.

2. Business details that match everywhere

Name, address and phone number on your site, your Google Business Profile, Companies House and the directories should be identical. Variations look like different businesses to a machine, and a business it cannot pin down is a business it does not name.

3. Reviews that mention the service

"Great job, lovely lads" tells an assistant nothing. "Removed our asbestos garage roof in a morning and left the consignment note" tells it exactly what you do and where. Ask customers to mention the job and the place.

4. Pages that answer the question asked

Assistants quote pages that already contain the answer. "Asbestos garage roof removal in Hull: what it costs and how it works" is quotable. "We provide comprehensive asbestos solutions" is not. This is why one page per service, with real detail and real prices, matters more than homepage copy.

5. Named expertise

Assistants weight content attributed to a named, qualified person. A surveyor profile with P402 and fifteen years in the industry is a source. An anonymous "about us" is not.

6. Structured data

Schema markup states facts about your business in a format machines read directly, as described in Google's structured data guide. Almost no contractor site has it. The ones that get cited usually do. We walk through exactly what to include in how to show your credentials so machines can verify them.

Not named? It is a verification problem, not a reputation problem

Thirty years of good work means nothing to an assistant if none of it is written down where it can read it.

An Envirorank website is built around the six signals above: licence and memberships in text and structured data, service pages that answer real questions, named people and case studies an assistant can quote. Most of it is live on day one and the monthly plan checks each month which prompts named you.

Why reputation alone no longer works

A contractor with thirty years of work, a full order book from word of mouth and a website from 2014 is invisible to this process. Not because the work is poor, but because none of it is written down where a machine can read it. The firm named instead may be newer and smaller. It gave the assistant something to verify. This is the same mechanism that decides commercial shortlists, which we set out in what buyers check before they shortlist you.

Test it yourself in two minutes

Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity and ask these three questions, swapping in your own town:

  • Who are the best licensed asbestos removal companies in [town]?
  • Which asbestos surveyors near [town] are UKAS accredited?
  • How much does asbestos garage roof removal cost in [town]?

If your business is not named, the buyers asking those questions are not finding you. If a competitor is named, open their site. You will usually find the licence number in text, a page that answers the question and reviews that mention the job. If the assistant names a national lead-gen network instead of any local firm, read what those networks cost you per job.

What fixing it involves, and how long it takes

The verification fixes are structural: credentials in text and schema, consistent business details, a Google Business Profile in the right category. These tend to show in AI answers within four to eight weeks. The content fixes take longer: service pages that answer real questions, case studies, area pages and named profiles accumulate over months and keep working. Our free check tells you which kind of fix your site needs, and the personal review that follows includes what the assistants actually say about you today.

Why this matters now

The shortlist is being written before anyone calls.

AI assistants are becoming the first stop for facilities managers and homeowners alike, and they only name firms they can verify. Every month a contractor waits, competitors who are cited build a lead that is hard to close. A new website built to be read and quoted, with monthly AI visibility work, is how you get into the answer now rather than later.

Questions this raises

Is AI visibility just SEO with a new name?

They overlap but differ in emphasis. SEO is about ranking pages for keywords. AI visibility is about being verifiable and quotable. A site can rank reasonably and still be absent from AI answers because it gives the tools nothing to confirm.

Which assistants matter most for asbestos work?

Google AI Overviews, because they sit on top of searches people already make, then ChatGPT and Perplexity for people who research in an assistant first. Gemini matters increasingly because it is built into Android phones. The same six signals serve all of them.

Can we pay to be named by an assistant?

No. There is no advertising inside the answers, which is the point: being named depends on what the tool can verify about you, and that is something you control through your website and profiles.

Be the contractor the AI assistant names.

Envirorank builds asbestos contractor websites around the signals AI tools verify, then checks every month which prompts named you. Websites £3,500. SEO and AI visibility £300 a month.
