Demolition and enabling works: win the whole job, not just the asbestos.
Plenty of licensed asbestos contractors also strip out, demolish and clear sites. Very few websites show it properly. With demolition now under carbon scrutiny and buyers asking harder questions, the firms that explain their full package clearly are the ones principal contractors and developers call first.
- Asbestos removal and demolition are bought together far more often than most contractor websites suggest.
- Government research published in March 2026 shows demolition decisions are now routinely weighed against retrofit and carbon.
- Buyers increasingly expect pre-demolition audits, recycling rates and carbon thinking, not just a price and a programme.
- Most combined asbestos and demolition firms bury their demolition offer on one generic services page.
- A clear service structure, real project evidence and written credentials turn one-off asbestos jobs into whole packages.

Two trades, one buyer
Demolition cannot start until asbestos has been dealt with. A refurbishment and demolition survey comes first, licensed removal follows where needed, and only then can soft strip and demolition begin. For a principal contractor, developer or housing association, the simplest option is one contractor who can manage the whole sequence.
Many asbestos firms already work this way. In the ARCA member list published in the autumn issue of ARCA and ATaC News, at least ten licensed contractors carry the word demolition in their company name or web address, and many more offer strip-out and site clearance alongside removal. Yet when you look at their websites, demolition is often a single paragraph on a crowded services page.
Why demolition is under the spotlight in 2026
The demolition sector is substantial. IBISWorld puts the UK demolition industry at 807 businesses and around £1.6 billion in 2026, growing at about 5% a year over the last five years. But the way demolition work is decided is changing.
In March 2026 the government published research on demolition, redevelopment and retrofitting of buildings. As RICS reported, around two thirds of respondents said they examine retrofit alongside demolition for all sites, while 73% said retrofit requires greater skill and expertise than demolition. Routine use of whole-life carbon assessments and demolition audits was relatively low, despite high awareness of their value. In April 2026 the UK Green Building Council went further, calling for retrofit first to become the default in planning and investment decisions.
None of this ends demolition. Buildings still reach the end of their life, and safety alone often decides the case. But it does change what clients look for. When demolition goes ahead, they want a contractor who can show careful deconstruction, high recycling rates and an understanding of carbon, and who can support a pre-demolition audit, which RICS describes as a key tool for reusing materials and reducing future emissions.
What buyers check before appointing a demolition contractor
The checks overlap with asbestos, which we cover in what buyers check before shortlisting, but demolition adds its own:
- Membership of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors, whose members are involved in up to 80% of UK demolition work, and its training standards.
- CCDO or other NDTG-backed competence cards for operatives, and the competence of supervisors and managers.
- Insurance levels suited to the size and risk of the project.
- Accreditation schemes such as CHAS, SMAS, SafeContractor or Constructionline, and ISO standards.
- Recycling and reuse performance, ideally with real percentages from completed projects.
- Plant fleet and capability for the type of structure, from domestic garages to high-rise.
- Evidence of similar projects: schools, hospitals, housing blocks, industrial sites.
- Asbestos licensing, if removal is part of the package.
Our audit of 204 member websites found that 44% of ARCA contractor homepages show accreditations only as logo images. For a combined asbestos and demolition contractor, that means buyers, Google and AI tools struggle to confirm the very credentials that win the job.
Does your website sell the whole package?
We design bespoke websites for asbestos and demolition contractors that give soft strip, asbestos removal, demolition and enabling works their own pages, backed by real project evidence, so buyers can see you can deliver the whole job.
Where most combined contractor websites fall short
- Asbestos, strip-out and demolition share one services page, so none of them ranks for its own searches.
- Enabling works is not mentioned by name, even though it is how developers and main contractors describe the package.
- There are no project pages showing tonnages, recycling rates, programme or access constraints.
- Credentials appear as a strip of logos rather than readable text.
- Nothing addresses carbon, reuse or pre-demolition audits, which planning teams and sustainability leads now ask about.
How to structure a website that sells the whole package
| Page | What it needs to answer |
|---|---|
| Asbestos removal | Licence, surveys, enclosures, clearances, timescales |
| Soft strip | What is removed, how materials are segregated, programme |
| Demolition | Structure types, methods, plant, safety and neighbour management |
| Enabling works | Site clearance, breaking out, crushing, ground preparation, handover to the main contractor |
| Pre-demolition audits and recycling | How materials are recorded, reused and recycled, with real percentages |
| Projects | Case studies by sector, with scope, tonnage, recycling rate and outcome |
| Accreditations | Every licence, membership and scheme in text, linked to its register |
| Areas | Pages for the regions you work in, built around real local projects |
The aim is simple. A buyer searching for demolition in your area, or asking an AI assistant who can remove asbestos and demolish a building on their site, should find a page that answers that exact question. We explain the local side in local SEO for asbestos companies and the AI side in how AI search chooses asbestos companies.
Turn carbon scrutiny into an advantage
Most demolition websites say nothing about carbon. That is an opportunity. A short page explaining how you segregate materials, what you typically recycle, how you support pre-demolition audits and how you reduce emissions on site gives sustainability teams exactly what they need to justify appointing you. Real numbers from real projects carry far more weight than general claims.
Frameworks and public sector work
Councils, housing associations and the NHS often procure asbestos removal, strip-out and demolition through the same frameworks. A clear, credential-led website supports every stage of that process, from supplier research to the quality questions in the tender. Our guide to winning asbestos frameworks explains what buyers look for, and our analysis of ASB5 data shows how much licensed work is driven by refurbishment and demolition.
The firms that win the whole job
Combined asbestos and demolition contractors already have what buyers want: one team, one programme and one point of responsibility. The gap is usually the website. Give each service its own page, prove your credentials in words, show real projects with real numbers and address carbon openly, and you give principal contractors and developers every reason to award the whole package rather than just the asbestos.

Questions about demolition and enabling works marketing
Should an asbestos contractor that also does demolition have one website or two?
In most cases one website is better. Buyers often want a single contractor for asbestos removal, soft strip and demolition, so a combined site with a clear page for each service shows the full package and builds authority in one place.
What do principal contractors check before appointing a demolition contractor?
Typically NFDC membership, recognised competence cards for operatives, insurance levels, accreditation schemes such as CHAS or Constructionline, health and safety record, recycling performance and evidence of similar projects, along with asbestos licensing where removal is part of the package.
What are enabling works?
Enabling works prepare a site for construction. They can include soft strip, asbestos removal, demolition, site clearance, breaking out slabs and foundations, crushing and recycling materials, and preparing the ground for the main contractor.
What is a pre-demolition audit?
A survey carried out before demolition to identify the materials in a building and how they can be reused, recycled or disposed of. Planning authorities and clients increasingly expect one on larger schemes.
How does the retrofit versus demolition debate affect demolition contractors?
Demolition is increasingly weighed against retrofit on carbon grounds, so contractors who can show careful deconstruction, high recycling rates and pre-demolition audit experience are better placed to win the work that does go ahead.
