Google Business Profile for asbestos contractors: the 40-minute fix that wins "near me" searches.
"Asbestos removal near me" is searched 1,900 times a month in the UK, and the map that answers it is decided almost entirely by your Google Business Profile. Most contractor profiles were claimed years ago, set to the wrong category, left with four reviews and never touched again. This is the exact list of what to change, in order, and why each change matters to the AI assistants as well as the map.
- The Google Maps results, the three businesses on the map, takes most clicks for near-me searches, and it is ranked on your profile and reviews rather than your website.
- Primary category, matching business details and reviews that mention the job are the three settings that move you into the pack.
- Reviews that say what was done and where are worth more than reviews that say the lads were tidy.
- Posting once a month and answering every review keeps the profile active, which Google rewards.
- The same profile feeds AI assistants: an inconsistent address or phone number on it is a reason not to name you.

Why the profile matters more than the website for near-me searches
Type "asbestos removal near me" or "asbestos removal" plus a town into Google and the first thing that is not an advert is a map with three businesses under it. That Google Maps results is ranked on three things Google states openly in its guidance on local ranking: relevance to the search, distance from the searcher and prominence, which is largely reviews and how well known the business is online. Your website affects relevance and prominence at the edges. Your Google Business Profile affects all three directly.
Google's own Keyword Planner shows 1,900 UK searches a month for "asbestos removal near me", 1,300 for "asbestos testing near me" and 170 for "asbestos removal companies near me". Add the town-name searches and the Google Maps results is deciding thousands of enquiries a month. Yet most contractor profiles we review were claimed once and abandoned.
The 40-minute fix, in order
1. Primary category: five minutes
Open the profile and check the primary category. It should be the one that matches your main work. "Asbestos testing service" exists as a category; so do related ones for removal and environmental contractors. A profile set to "Contractor" or "Construction company" is competing in the wrong race. Add the other relevant categories as secondary.
2. Name, address and phone: five minutes
Make the business name exactly the legal or trading name you use everywhere else, with no keywords stuffed in, which breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended. Make the address and phone number identical to your website, Companies House and the directories. Machines treat variations as different businesses; an AI assistant that finds two phone numbers for you does not pick one, it picks a competitor.
3. Service area: five minutes
If you travel to customers, set the service areas to the towns you genuinely cover rather than the whole country. Google limits the radius it will show you in anyway, and honest areas match the area pages on your site, which we cover in local SEO without thin location pages.
4. Services with descriptions: ten minutes
Add each service as its own item with a sentence of description and a price range where you have one: licensed removal, non-licensed removal, surveys, testing, garage roofs, Artex, disposal. This is the relevance signal for searches like "asbestos garage roof removal near me", and it is the text AI assistants read when deciding what you do.
5. Photos: five minutes
Upload ten real photos: vans, an enclosure set-up, a finished garage roof, the team, the yard. Not stock, not logos. Profiles with recent photos get more clicks, and a photo of a real enclosure tells a buyer more than any strapline.
6. Link the right pages: five minutes
Point the website link at your homepage and the appointment or quote link at your quote form. If your site has a cost guide, add it as a post so the price question is answered inside Google.
7. Ask for the next review properly: five minutes to set up, forever after
This is the one that compounds. See below.
A perfect profile that lands on a site with a logo for a licence and a ten-field form wastes the click.
Every Envirorank website is built to catch the Google Maps results click: the licence in text, a page per service with prices, area pages that match your service areas, tap-to-call and a six-field form. We set the Google Business Profile up to match as part of the build, and keep it posted and answered on the monthly plan.
Reviews that mention the job
Review count matters, but the words matter more. "Great lads, very tidy" tells Google and an AI assistant nothing about what you do. "Removed the asbestos garage roof at our house in Washington, left the consignment note and swept the drive" contains the service, the material and the place. Twenty of those are worth more than a hundred of the first kind.
You get them by asking at the right moment and making it specific. The right moment is the day the clearance certificate or the waste consignment note is handed over, when the customer is relieved and grateful. The specific ask is a short message: "Would you mind leaving us a review? If you can mention what we removed and where, it helps other people in your area find us." Send the direct review link, which Google provides in the profile. Google's review guidelines forbid paying for reviews or filtering who gets asked, so ask everyone and ask the same way.
Then reply to every review, in a sentence, within a week. Replies are visible to the next customer and signal to Google that the profile is managed.
Keeping it alive: ten minutes a month
A profile with a post this month and a photo last month outranks an identical one that has been static since 2021. Once a month, post one photo and three sentences about a recent job, add any new service, and check that no suggested edit from the public has changed your category or hours. On our monthly plan this is part of the standing work, with the AI visibility check run against the same profile.
What this does for AI search
Assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity use the profile as one of the main sources for who you are, where you are and what people say about you. A profile with the right category, matching details, specific reviews and recent activity gives them a business they can describe with confidence. A dormant one with a mismatched phone number gives them a reason to name someone else. The map is no longer the only answer.
Google's AI answers and assistants like ChatGPT now sit above and alongside the map for many "near me" searches, and they draw on your Business Profile and your website together. A strong profile pointing to a weak site leaves you out of the AI answer. A new website and monthly AI visibility work close that gap. See how AI search chooses asbestos companies.

Questions this raises
Should we create a profile for each town we cover?
No. Google only allows a profile for a staffed location, and profiles created for addresses that are not real premises are removed, taking their reviews with them. One profile with honest service areas, backed by real area pages on your site, is the compliant route.
Our profile shows an old address. How do we fix it?
Request the change in the profile and have your website, Companies House and the main directories show the same new address before you do. Google verifies against what it finds elsewhere, and a lone change on the profile is often rejected.
How many reviews do we need?
Enough to look established against the other two businesses in your Google Maps results, which in most towns means twenty or more, and a steady trickle of new ones. The Four Stage Clearance uses twenty as its threshold for that reason.
